Phonics
Information about our Phonics Teaching and Learning
Here at St. Francis, we use a validated Department for Education complete systematic synthetics phonics (SSP) programme. We have chosen a SSP that builds on the work we have already completed as a school and that aligns tightly to our new Teaching and Learning Policy. We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised (2021) SSP. We follow their progression, planning and teaching delivery and methods to ensure our children learn to read as quickly as reasonably possible. This in turn means that children can then use their reading skills to support the rest of their learning.
To find out more about how we teach phonics, please read the rest of this website page and also download the PDF document at the bottom of the page titled 'St Francis Church of England Primary School - Phonics Teaching LW.LS'
A booklet titled 'St Francis Church of England Primary School - EYFS.KS1 Reading Procedures LW.LS' is another useful document that will highlight how our phonics and early reading teaching weaves together. This is the focus on children applying their phonics knowledge into reading books.
Our Early Reading Policy can be found here.

Articulation of Phonemes
It is really important that the sounds are said clearly and without any other sound attached. When sounds are not said correctly, it can confuse children and they can sometimes struggle to put the sounds together to make the word.
